Girl awarded Macau casino jackpot

A casino in Macau has been ordered to pay out nearly $100,000 (£51,000) in prize money won by a 16-year-old girl who was too young to enter the casino.

The Sands Casino had said the win was invalid because the girl was underage.

But gambling authorities in the Chinese territory said the rules only specified a minimum age for entering the casino, not for gambling once inside.

The prize is to go to the girl’s mother and the laws are to be rewritten to close the age loophole.

The 16-year-old girl from Hong Kong, whose name has not been released, was given the equivalent of about $12 by her grandmother as a Lunar New Year present to play on the slot machines in nearby Macau.

Legal puzzle

She went to the Sands Casino with her mother and grandmother and put all her money into one slot machine.

The winning combination came up, but the casino refused to pay out when staff discovered the girl was under 18.

Macau’s gambling watchdog, the Gaming Inspection and Co-ordination Bureau, overruled the casino’s decision after meeting the girl and her mother.

“We have decided that the money must be paid, not to the child, but to her mother,” the bureau’s director Manuel Joaquim das Neves, was quoted as saying by the South China Morning Post.

The gaming bureau has, however, barred the mother from Macau’s casinos as punishment for bringing a minor inside.

The BBC’s Vaudine England in Hong Kong says a legal puzzle arose because the contract between any gambler and the casino requires payment of winnings.

But the law does not say what to do if a minor illegally enters a casino, gambles, and wins.

Macau has been working on a major overhaul of its gambling laws since the monopoly on gambling licences was ended in 2002.

The casino industry has been booming since then, and the legal loophole barring under-18s from entering casinos but allowing them to play is likely to be closed, says our correspondent.

I just watched a live car chase through the streets of L.A. even though I am in Detroit, Michigan.

Through the magic of CNN, I can watch news events as it happens. Wow, who would have thought this would be where technology has taken us. We can find out the instant Britney Spears shaves her head and listen to the salon owner who now has a lock of Spears’ hair for sale on Ebay.

What TV does is make us a peeping tom into the lives of people who we don’t know but we want to know. It makes us nosy, and what’s so bad about it, is we are right there almost the instant it happens.

I wish we would have had TV back in the 1800s. when slaves were bought and sold like pork ribs on the Fourth of July. What would we have seen? Fathers, sons, mothers, daughters being sold to the highest bidder, their lives described like a sunday matinee movie.

That’s what TV does, it gives us a memory, a point of reference so we can say, “I saw that.”

First of all let me send my condolences to the family of Anna Nicole Smith (A.N.S.).

That being said, let’s examine the ANS phenomenom. Yahoo! reports today that there have been more searches for information on this woman than they can remember for any celebrity dead or alive.

That makes me wonder, what is this fascination we have with celebrities, or to put it more succinctly, other people’s lives?

Sure, we can armchair quarterback and say where ANS went wrong in her choice of men, her choice of men who may have given her and her son drugs to do her in, but alas, we must remain objective, and leave our human nature, gut feeling opinions in a sack on the back porch.

Let me play devil’s advocate real quick. Howard K. Stern was in a committed relationship to one of the world’s richest women. This woman was a former Playboy bunny with boobs the size of cantaloupes.

She was an attractive blonde, and unfortunately did not appear to be the sharpest tool in the shed. But, nevertheless, she was shrewd enough to know how to work the media for maximum financial gain.

ANS married an octogenarian billionaire, whom we have seen in previous home videos riding on the back of a scooter with his voluptuous bride. The old man was as happy as a lark! I mean the expression on his face while on the back of that scooter, was as they say, ‘priceless.’

The billionaire dies, leaves ANS half of his monetary legacy to the tune of $474 BILLION. Now we all know that no family in the world is going to let this dim-witted blonde get her golden died roots on all this money! It just won’t happen, not in America.

So the family fights, they lose, ANS wins, and she continues her search for true love and happiness. She dates many, loves none, winds up with a photographer named Larry Birkhardt.

Larry and ANS enjoy each other so much they talk about having a kid, pictures of the happy couple make every tabloid on this earth. ANS may just have found a love interest.

But, as love goes, it goes and it goes. Larry is out, Howard K. Stern is in. But there is a twist, ANS is pregnant. Whoa, that bread baking in the oven is a billionaire before it is born. And any man with a 4th grade education would be happy to claim paternity. That kid is a steak, lobster, caviar, champagne meal ticket!

However, ANS has an adult son, who has some emotional issues that is being controlled by mind altering medications (legal and illegal)means and he may be a burden or get in the way of a more sinister plan. All the new boyfriend has to do is keep the son happy in a drug induced stupor, so that the son won’t get in the way of plans that don’t include him. Except things go awry, the son dies of too much methadone, and what, no investigation? Wow, go to the Bahamas and kill someone, they’ll sweep it under the rug in no time, if you have enough money that is.

Meanwhile, ex-beau Larry The Photographer is screaming at the top of his lungs that ANS is carrying his love child and he wants to do the right thing by the child. How admirable. Wonder if ANS was a welfare mother getting Focus Hope and WIC benefits would he still be trying so hard to claim paternity?

Now, the What’s In It For Me factor has a huge shine to it. Howard K. has an attorney who is on every major news outlet proclaiming the paternal responsibility her client has. So much paternal responsibility that a hurry up court session was held yesterday morning (not even 24 hours after ANS died) to order DNA testing on both ANS and the baby.

The judge had good sense and told the legal litigants to vamoose and find something else to do on a Friday.

With all that said, I truly understand why you are more famous in death than in life.
