LINK BUILDING 4 DUMMIES

To turn your blog into ‘link bait,’ you must first provide good quality content that will make people naturally link to your blog.

One of the most important tactics I’ve learned and have begun using is incorporating my friends’ links in the body of my blog posts. This way, when this article is shared, so are the links. It’s a more effective way to utilize these reciprocal links than by placing all of those backlinks in one specific place on your blog. Hint: When Google spiders spot words like ’sponsor’ and ‘advertiser,’ the words lose value on your blog. So be careful.

Combine your backlinks with new and old sites. Show new and upcoming sites some love by including them in your link exchange program. Take into consideration the relation of your back links to your blog - relevant links carry much more weight than non-relevant ones. Remember, the search engines will judge your blog by the links you link back to, so make sure your links are reputable ones.

Also, research who you link with. This should be a rule of thumb when link building. Find out who else links to the sites you are attempting to link to. Visit Google and download their toolbar. Then check the status of the link by typing in the URL to see if the site has been indexed yet.

Another tactic is to go to any of the major search engines and look for your target keywords. Look for the pages that appear in the top results, then contact those site owners and see if they are willing to exchange links with you. Be professional in your communication with them, having a link of your own in mind that you want to exchange.

Also, check Netscape Open Directory. According to Eric Ward, President of Net Post and URLwire, you can have multiple “links to your site’s content as long as that content is a match for the category you are submitting to.”

Remember, think of your link as a footprint, and leave your link anywhere you can! Look for additional link building opportunities in Discussion Groups, Guest Books and Forums.
