What is Affiliate Marketing?
By Shawn Collins

This is chapter 1, What is Affiliate Marketing?, of Successful Affiliate Marketing for Merchants.

In brief, I usually describe affiliate marketing as the online equivalent of Avon.

Back when I was growing up, we had the Avon lady in the neighborhood. She would sell cosmetics door to door, and if she made a sale, she earned a commission.

It’s as simple as that - when applied online, people have Web sites where they can display advertisements, and if they refer a transaction from their ads, they earn a commission.

Affiliate marketing is a fairly simple concept, but people complicate it sometimes.

As far as a quick history of affiliate marketing, it’s a little over ten years old in it’s online form. A lot of people attribute the concept to Jeff Bezos an Amazon.com, but CDNow actually launched a primitive version of an affiliate program a year or so before Amazon.com.

So CDNow were innovators, but Amazon.com certainly popularized affiliate marketing, and they deserve recognition there.

In terms of defining an affiliate, it used to be simply a content site. But affiliates have evolved greatly over the years, and these days an affiliate can be essentially any method used to market online. For instance, affiliates are using data feeds, SEO, blogs, video, pay per click search engines, etc.

The affiliate program model is generally applied to one of three types: pay per sale (revenue share), pay per lead, or pay per click. Some affiliate programs combine these models to form a hybrid affiliate program.

People often wonder what sort of companies have affiliate programs. Well, the top retail Web sites, ranked by dollars spent (excluding auction sites, large corporate purchases and travel) for the 2006 holiday season (Nov. 1 – Dec. 26) were as follows, according to comScore Networks:

Amazon.com

Dell.com

Yahoo.com

Walmart.com

Ticketmaster.com

JCPenney.com

Apple.com

Bestbuy.com

Victoriassecret.com

Circuitcity.com

Affiliate programs are all over the list of top retail sites. But they are also just a common among Mom and Pop stores online.

That said, affiliate marketing is not easy. It’s not something where you can simply throw money at it and see great results. Rather a successful affiliate program requires a number of things, including creativity, focus, effort, and money.

Internet Based Affiliate Marketing
By Paul Turner

Internet based affiliate marketing is growing ever more popular as the economy declines. Although it is fairly obvious there is offline affiliate marketing but this is usually run by larger companies in the form of refer a friend coupons.

For the vast majority of people reading this article internet based, or online affiliate marketing is of much more interest. This is because anyone with a computer and an internet connection can sign up to affiliate marketing companies like Clickbank, the absolute daddy of them all and make money.

My main motivation in writing this article on internet business is to point out the thing that most people online lack - an affiliate marketing strategy.

The internet is full of advice, free, great value for money and downright expensive to the point of robbery in some cases, but the strategy is what holds it together.

Supposing you read that you should be writing articles to make money and promote your online business. This really does work, but most people just start writing articles. Let me contrast with what I do - article writing has really helped my with my business and this is the basic strategy here.

1 - I actually research my keywords and have a list of words / phrases that people search for. The title of this article is one of them for example.

2 - I try to write 30 articles of around 300 to 500 words, and I write in such a way that it is easy for the search engines to see what the article is about.

3 - I will put 10 on one particular article directory, 10 on another site I recommend, and send the rest out to lots of article directories, but in a certain way.

4 - I tick off against each article what I have done so I know where I am up to.

5 - I send all of / most of the traffic to my blog where readers can get useful content for free if they join my newsletter, and tell me exactly what help they need.

6 - I monitor the results so I know what works and what doesn’t

I now I haven’t given all of the details because it would take a book, not an article, but can you see what I mean when I say I have a strategy - a proven one at that.

If you have been affiliate marketing on the internet for a while can you honestly say you are as organized, and if you are just starting out then I urge you to not get distracted from your own plan, or whoever’s plan you decide to follow.

Rumors Are True

Avoiding Problems With Your Affiliate Marketing Business
By Vanessa A. Doctor

Affiliate marketing is a Web-based venture wherein an individual is marketing a product of other companies for profit. An affiliate marketer will earn their share of income through commissions, a percentage of the total sales when a product is sold through their site. Despite other methods in earning profit on the Internet, affiliate marketing is considered as the most lucrative venture that requires less effort and expense in setting it up.

But in truth, not everything about affiliate marketing is easy. If not done properly, you will be experiencing tons of problems that will lead to the downfall of your business, as well as saying good bye any possibility of a decent income. Here are some problems with affiliate marketing and how to avoid them.

Avoiding Competition

Considering the profit to be had in this venture, we can never deny the fact that there a lot of competitions around the market. We can see a lot of affiliate marketers selling the same product on the Internet, going for the same promised profit to be had when a product is sold.

To avoid the competition, it would be best to do a little research beforehand when you look for a product for your affiliate marketing business. Look for the most popular product that will most likely sell faster than the others so that you can stay up on the fierce competition in this line of business.

Slow Profit

Even if you apply Internet marketing strategies to tell the world about your product, we can never deny the fact that we can only get a fraction of the total sales. As an affiliate marketer, you are selling the product of another company and not your own; so you will not be getting the full profit that was promised, but will instead rely on the commissions that you will get every time you sell one of theirs.

The only way to make a decent profit as an affiliate marketer is to look for a product that will sell faster to the online public. Selling a few products in a month is hardly what you call lucrative, so it would be best to look for a niche that will be selling like hotcakes to the online consumer so that you can see the profits rolling in.

You might notice that the problems with affiliate marketing are centered mainly on the product that you sell out to the public. Since the niche that you chose for this venture is considered as your bread and butter, you need to carefully pick out one that can provide the most profit. You don’t necessarily have to stick with a high-priced niche, but focus more on affordable ones that will result to more sales and earnings.
